I had a similar issue with a Honda XL250R last year when I replaced the stock turn signal lights with some small aftermarket ones. The new bulbs didn't draw enought current to trip the blinker relay. I replaced the relay with a cheap car part, a couple bucks at Pep Boys, and everything worked fine. Might not be your problem but I thought I mention it.

The $5-$7 electronic flasher should handle low loads on incandescent bulbs without any problems. I replaced the factory flasher on my 82 1100G with an generic electronic one, but the poles did not match up even though the prongs lined right up in the harness. This doesn't matter on a two prong flasher, but it's critical on a three prong one. Is yours two or three prong?

If you end up changing the poles around, you can keep the factory harness and just slip the connectors out of the plastic housing and then re-arrange them to the right poles. The back of the falsher packaging should denote which is X (12V+ in), P (out to flasher indicator), and L (to the signal itself).

I had a similar problem just out of the blue, seems one wire was disconnected in the headlight bucket... just a thought.

            signal problem

I had a similiar problem and one of the wires to a signal was apparently broken inside (It looked fine though). I re-wired it and it now works fine. Good luck!

been there , done that, but my problem was I had to ground the front turn signals, still don't know why but I eneded up running a ground from the frame up front to the bucket and to the shafts coming out of the signals.

Try running a wire from frame to the nuts on the stalks for grins.

I highly doubt this is your problem; but, reminds me of just recently when I was restoring my Vetter fairing. Buddy and I were working on it all day, last thing we test and the signals light but don't blink. We spent about an hour while dead-tired testing the T/S relay and looking over all the wiring. Ended up we just didn't think to plug the front signals in for the test. Felt brillant solving that one
Best of luck, sorry I don't have a better (and helpful) story.

If you're gonna use a thermal flasher, it's a good idea to seal up the porus bottom of it with some silicone sealant - it will make it withstand heavy or frequent moisture.
