        airbox

Even without the airbox it should start mine does78gs1000, If it won't even try and start, will it turn over? Check plugs for fire. check coils .......I am not a mechanic but even without aibox it should at least try and start.

          Sure
Even if the missing air box would cause the engine to run lean it still would start. Who rebuilt the engine and did it ever run after the rebuld. What year and sze of engine--ther are many folks with diferent experience that wil help if you give lots of info. Who installed the cams and adjusted the valves ??? points or electronic--etc. etc.
Was gerry telling the truth about the pig???

If it has CV carbs (1980 and later) it may not start without the airbox and if it does it will probably run very badly. CV carbs are designed to use the vacuum in the airbox to raise the slides.

CV carbs are the ones with the flat round covers on top. If you have an '80 or newer you will have CV carbs.

Sorry Don, but the vaccum comes from the engine and not the airbox.

The bike will start just fine with no airbox. To get it to fire up, start with the basics. Do you have fuel and spark? Is the valve lash set correctly? Check the ignition and cam timing. If it has sat for any amount of time, put some oil down the spark plug holes to seal the rings.

Be careful of how much you crank the motor. If the rebuild involved new rings and a bore, you can do a lot of damage by cranking the engine exessivly as the oil won't be where you need it.

Thats what I was looking for. If it was so then one would not be able to use pods

Wheelie, yes the vacuum is produced by the engine, but the airbox has a vacuum too (relative to the surrounding atmosheric pressure). More correctly, the carbs operate on the pressure differential, and that is why jet kits for CV carbs come with softer springs: the low pressure behind the carbs is no longer there to help raise the slides. CV carbs are also made to run at the edge of leanness, and so any blockage of fuel (slides not raising) will have noticeable effects. I still maintain that most bikes with CV carbs will hardly run and/or start without the airbox.

I have CV carbs on my 81 850. It starts with the air box off of the bike. It runs like garbage but it starts. Cold or warm it starts. Once warmed up it is even drivable but not really great till the rpms are up around the 3500 range. The airbox missing should NOT cause it not to start. There has to be something else going on.
