    adjusting clutch?

whenever I put the 79 GS1000S into 1st gear, it grinds until it finally slips into gear. I don't have any problem with the clutch slipping when starting, or when sitting at lights, nor while riding, and it doesn't matter if the oil is warm or cold. I also don't have any problem shifting. Only into 1st gear.

Just wondering if this is unique to the GS or if I need to adjust the clutch.

I'm running 10-30 in the gearbox.

    Thanks

    idle

Mine does this if my idle is high, if I lower it it is quiet. What RPM are you putting it into first?

      SEM,

The idle would be low, about 750 or so. I would have warmed up the engine for 2 minutes or so at about 3000rpm, then push in the choke, and blip the throttle a few times, then clutch in and push down the shift lever into first and ggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr clunk. It shounds as though the gear is still spinning and needs to slow down. The grinding will also happen whenever I put the bike into neutral, such as at a red light or when at a checkpoint.

      It's annoying :-)

Try adjusting the clutch so that there is less freeplay in the lever.
