    random hesitation

    1981 gs 400l
    all stock, all clean

    hesitates around 3500-5000

feels like a fouled plug , ( both are new and gaped right)

sometimes it will recover and pull strong but most of the time it will just sputter and surge

Engine and ignition are fine , 163/160psi compression

it will start on choke now but will only idle up for about 10 seconds and then dies, i know it should just keep reving

    Plugs are both clean/tan

air fuel is set right on,

air filter is new and clean,

    above 7000 its strong

Almost feels like its starving , but it even hesitates on prime,,,

    anyone have any ideas ?

Plug boots could be gone. If they are old, replace them.

are the carb slides working properly. Have you checked your battery.Get the multimeter out and do a test,it could very well be dirty wiring or coil problem.

turns out it was just crud in the carbs , after a good cleaning soaking, they finaly came clean.

          bike runs good now.
