    Remedy for stripped stud

I thought I was going to have a nice ride today after having my fresh tire mounted, but soft steel has screwed me.

On the very last axle clamp nut I was tightening, the stud stripped. I have learned through a search that I can swap out the stud (luckily I have a spare set of forks)

My problem is this: the nut is just about all the way on and now spins freely in both directions without either tightening or loosening. How can I get it off, short of cutting it, or is that the only option?

Just a thought, how about tightening the nut on the opposite side of the fork? If you have some space, the "u" clamp should then push on the stripped stud/nut. It may be just enough for it to get a "bite" and come off.

Now that I think about it.... I should try a vice grip, so I can apply some downward pressure. Thanks for kicking my brain into gear.
