Fork oil level, with or without springs?

The factory manual seems to say that you fill the fork tubes to within 170mm of the top with (fill in your fork oil here) and THEN put in the springs but a few threads I've read here seem to say that you put in the springs and THEN put the oil to the spec in the book which would mean less oil with the thicker Progressive springs I'm running.

Which is it? Do I have too much fork oil or WAY to much fork oil? I know I have at least too much because I followed the book and put in oil to 170mm of the top on both forks and then installed the heavier springs.

Last time I had the bike out in the twisties it felt a little... a little.... I don't know how to describe it... When I was leaned over a little in a turn it felt like I could feel every ripple in the road with the forks, not enough to feel dangerous but it felt pretty "hard". I used to have a little "twitch" in the bars when leaning but another 1/8th turn on the bearings took care of that.

I've got stock GS750ES forks, progressive springs, 1.5in PVC preload and 1.25in sag. I'm using 10wt oil with about 6psi of air. (I'm going to try with no air next)

    Springs removed.

BTW, you're not supposed to run any air with the Progressives. You may need a longer spacer to make up for not having any air in the fork.

Measure the fork oil level with the springs removed.

          How'd the forks come out?

Hey, how'd the forks work out? I was talking to me brother, he said " back in the day they used to drill the holes at the bottom a little bigger so more fluid could flow through the fork, and also put in a spacer at the bottom of the spring to tighten it up". Then again he only rides mountain bikes now....

You can't just go drilling unless you know what you're doing and the preload spacers go on top of the spring. You can play with oil weight to change damping characteristics.

              Hey Stev,

They worked out fine. I'm swtiching to later USD forks when I can but with the Progessive springs and fork brace I'm happy with these for now.

Try answering your phone sometime and I'll tell you about my tire pressure woes...
