Looked at a bike, need advice

    Hey all,
Sorry for the length. Yesterday I went to look at a bike for sale and with the info I have I would like to get some advice. First of all The guy told me it was a '81 GS550. After looking at the tag I noticed that it was actually a '77. I think that was a honest mistake since he seemed pretty surprised. He even told me to look at the tag on the neck. I don't think he was trying to pull one over on me. Looked clean and I didn't notice any rust. He did some work to it about 3 years ago. New paint(flames...yuck). New tires. New bearings and seals on the front. New mufflers. New battery last year. Has a plastic windscreen. Has plastic luggage box behind the tail(large enough for a helmet). Looks nice. He has had it for six years and did this stuff 3 years ago.
Now for some stuff I am not crazy about. The engine looked a little wet near where the tach cable comes out of the engine. He said that it used to leak oil there. Looks like it still may leak a little. Around the time of the leak he said he had the instrument cluster off and when he turned the cluster over some oil came out of it. He attributed it to the leak mentioned above. Ever since then the speedo bounces around when you get over 30mph. The carbs have never been taken off in the six years he owned it. For winter starage he would put stabilizer in the tank. In the spring he would put some STP carb cleaner in the tank and thats how he cleaned the carbs. I was kinda wishing he would have emptied the carbs before parking it for the winter. It's a little cold blooded. He starrted it and it had to have about full choke for a few minutes before it would run steady. He said he was not patient so instead of letting it warm up on it's own he would rap it out and hold the throttle so the the revs were higher and it would warm up faster. He also thought that maybe it ran a little rich. Didn't get a test drive because it was pouring rain. When I asked if it shifted good he said yes, but sometimes it would go into the wrong gear since they are so close or something like that. I think he mentioned 5th and 6th specifically.
He was asking for $1,500 obo. I was thinking that was a little high since I would want a new instrument cluster, try to fix the leak and get the carbs cleaned out. What do you guys think? Thanks.

I think $1,500 is a little steep. If its really clean and everything is in good shape then maybe. You don't mention mileage. Do you remember what's on the clock. I would imagine it needs a good carb cleaning. The insturment cluster probably needs cleaning too. Why there would be oil coming out is beyond me. I suppose it could move up the tach cable but wouldn't think so. It probably needs a new cable and o-ring to seal it. Look at BikeBandit to see what's there and how much it costs. The speedo bounce can be caused by a loose cluster, bad cable or cable needing lube or dirty speedo. Unfortunately speedo work needs to be done by a Zen Master. If you can get it cleaned and lubed it might help. As far as the choking goes my '83 750 its about the most cold natured animal I've ever had. It takes a coupla' miles before it off completely. Were the new mufflers stock? If they were not then some rejetting maybe required. If you could ride it a few miles then check the plugs and test compression that would tell you a lot about the condition of the fuel system and engine. If all goes well I'd say $750, $1,000 tops. LOL!

$1500 is way too much money. As for the leak it's pretty common and the stabilizer in the tank over the winter is a good thing. Having to use the choke for a few minutes is also common. Offer him $800 and negotiate from there. If it runs really good I wouldn't go any higher than $1200 and that is pushing the limit as far as I'm concerned for a 550. With a little patience you could pick up a 750 for that and maybe even an 1100 on a lucky day.

Sounds like the leak is just the seals in the tack gear...easy cheap fix.
Carbs should be cleaned but again no big deal.
Oil in the cluster??? Should'nt be unless he put it in there to loosen things up.
Bouncing speedo could be that the cable needs cleaned/oiled/lubed.
$1500 for a '77 sounds real high to me....

Yeah, $1500 is WAY too much. It's not like the bike has 2000 miles on it and is in perfect condition. Even then you'd be paying way above normal market value. Also, you WILL need to invest some money into it. Don't fool yourself into thinking you'll plunk down your $1500 and that'll be the end of it.
Now, if you get to ride it for 20 miles AND thoroughly check it out (compression, charging system, plug color, oil leaks, air leaks, exhaust leaks) and everything is PERFECT, then I'd MAYBE pay $900. You are only getting a 550cc after all.

i'll echo and say that 1500 is a little steep, but really, none of the problems you listed are serious at all. The speedo cable just needs to be lubed, a seal by the tach cable (heck, mine leaks a little) and every old carb bike ever has been cold blooded lol

Thanks for all the fast feedback. Good internet support is one more thing I am looking for in a bike. Looks like I got it here. If this bike does not work out some sort of GS will be on the "short list" of what I want. Keep the feedback coming. I do not see him coming down that far but I will give it a try in a couple days. This site is great.

You all seem pretty dead on with your suggestions on what I should offer. Kelly Blue Book says retail would be $800. Sounds like a good place to start. I will give him a call in a couple days and see whats up.

If that doesn't help and he has internet service show him this thread.

                      Check the title

He said it was an '81... check to see if the title has the same info on it.. it may have been a lost title.. and they replaced it..
look on the site here in the gallery section at some of the 77-79 550's they will confirm the year range of the bike..
                      Yeah he is steep..
shifting maybe hard because he was not riding it all the time..
mine got easier at shifting and I am riding it daily.. ( I have a 78 550)...

Where are you located? I am in CT and got a 82 1100 G in great shape on Friday for 1300. I saw a bunch of 750s and 850s in various places asking 900-1200 and they might be in better shape...

I got him to come down to $1,200. Th highest I am willing to go is $1,000 so no deal. If he were to call me with $1,100 I may change my mind. Until then, I am moving on. Thanks for your advice.
