    igniter failure????

    Hey Folks:

    When an Igniter fails, does it go all at once?? Or will it tend to work intermittenly.

    A few weeks ago I lost spark on my 80' 1100E and checked the Sig. Gen. which was OK so I replaced the igniter (with a used one). Machine fired right up but this morning I can't get no spark.

    Could something else be screwed up to cause me to be destroying igniters??

    I didn't, however, have time to replace the igniter to see if it was suspect. I have to go home and push my ride about 50 yards up the mountain. Man this is gonna be fun.

    Like anything electronic there's a chance it could start a get hot enough for a circuit to be intemittent. How many wires in and how many out on your ignitor? Siganl generators should test between 130-200 ohms I blelieve.

      YOu know...concerning that sig/gen test.

      I tested the sig/gen on my 80' 1100E and it did not behave like the manual said it should. My meter seemed to "pulse" and never stablize to a definite resistance. Sooooo, I did the same test on my 80' GS750 and my 81' GS750. All three sig./gens. behaved exactly the same. The resistance would rapidly drop but then it would jump back to infinity....and I mean fast.

      Am I missing something on the test??

        My manual isn't very specific. It just says if resistance is infinity or less the signal generator must be replaced. One thing you might want to try is to turn the crank so the rotor is pointed at the generators when you test.

          The electrical plug connectors sometimes loose contact which causes the component to intermittently not function. Try disconnecting the plug and clean it out with contact cleaner or such and plug it back up. Doing this fixed a problem I was experiencing with my igniter.

            Good tip. Fuse connections might be something to look at too.

              Very useful. The other day I had a "head-fuse" go bad and when I replaced it the bike still didn't want to start until I fidgeted (is that a word?) with the fuse. I think I'll do some serious cleaning on the electrical connections...............after I re-cover from my stroke after pushing my ride UP the $#@@#$$$#ing mountain!!!!!!!!
