Case guard question not sure if I'm in the right forum

Hey everybody. I'm not sure if this should be here or in appearance mods. I'm looking on ebay for case guards for a 82 GS550L and I found a set with a lot of srface rust on one side. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/engin...QQcmdZViewItem
I have no idea how to put a link in so I hope that works. My question is does anyone know it I could clean up rust like that or does it look more like a repaint. I'd like to get them but I'd like to make sure they could be made to look good. If anyone needs parts for an 82 550l it looks like the seller is parting out most of the bike. Thanks for any help.

Take some 00 or 0000 steel wool and some chrome polish. They may clean up good enough to live with.

I have one crappy case guard as well. The chrome is just peeling off. I'm going to take it to a bumper shop that does re-chroming. We'll see.
