Chain & Sprocket
Help:: I have a 79 GS 1000 with 35,000 miles on it and I need to replace ny chain and sprocket. I thought the original was an endless o ring type?? Anybody have any ideas on what size I should be using? I do know that I need to replace both sprockets and chain together but there are so many options out there I have no idea where to start. :? :? :? :?Tags: None

I started by getting rid of my chain-drive bikes and went to a shaft. No more chain problems.
(Have not had a chain-drive bike since April, 1979)
I know that does not answer your question quite the way you wanted, so I hope someone with more chain experience chimes in here soon.

I also own a '79 GS1000E.
I've had the best performance from DID. Tsubaki is also very good.
Your factory chain is a 630 O-ring type, 96 links.
Best lube I've found is Maxima chain wax (gold can).
Changing the sprockets with each new chain may be a waste of money. I can't see your sprockets so I can't judge. But that "rule of thumb" is often false. Look up some pics and info on spocket wear. Do yours look like that?
If you do buy sprockets, get steel ones for longest life. Much depends on the sprocket/chain quality and how the bike was ridden and maintained.
Many are now going to lighter 530 chain conversions. And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!
