petcock question
last night i pulled the tank off my project gs750l (its my first project) I tried sucking on the vent line with my mouth and ended up with a small amount of gas in my mouth and no fuel flowed out of the main line in the run position. Will the bike run if I just leave the petcock in the prime position? I would like to get the bike running before spending money on a new petcock.Tags: None

In the "Prime" position the petcock valve is held continuously open and fuel should flow to the carbs unimpeded. Be careful that the carb bowls don't overflow when the engine is off.
In the normal or "Run" position the diaphragm is what activates the valve and therefore needs vacuum to do this. I bought a ner petcock from Bike-Bandit US$50.00 for my GS650 project as the tank came minus this device.

Petcock
Yeah, you don't want to flood your crankcase with a bunch of gasoline. I'm guessing your bike is a 1980 model but petcocks and electrics seem to be the major "biggies" with these wonderful, old bikes. Consider a Pingel and do a search to see what it's all about. Good luck!:-D1980 GS1100E....Number 15!
