I'm trying to get the hang of the friction zone of the clutch and would find it a bunch easier if it were closer to fully in than fully out. Can anyone either tell me I'm a dip-spinach or give me a pointer or two about adjusting the clutch closer to the handlebar?

Okay, so you folks can make fun of me for being a new biker if you want...

gawd - I dont belong anywhere near the Techy forum... but here goes -
I know nothing about the clutch assembly except that from very recent similar experience....it seemed I had to crank the lever almost ALL the way in to engage the clutch....
...after a lil inspection I found that I had too much "free play" in the clutch lever.... meaning there was a certain amount of movement in the lever before it even began to tension the cable...
even though it was only a few mils of free travel it greatly effected the point that the clutch would engage....
by simply adjusting the cable at the clutch lever I was able to take up the slack and ensure the clutch engaged earlier ...
might help if you check this before getting into more complicated issues...
sheeesh - ok Im outta here before the techy moderators arrive and charge me with impersonating somebody who knows anything about bikes 8-[

The stock levers don't have travel adjusters like the newer ones do, so you can't really set the lever closer to the bar without replacing the clutch lever with a new one. Also, the amount of "free play" as Phark talked about is critical, too much and the clutch won't dis-engage, too little and it won't engage properly. I think with most models it is 2-3mm of cable slide is the correct free play.
You can try to loosen up the clutch cable for more free-play, but if your plates are worn at all you may have problems getting the clutch to dis-engage, especially when the weather and the engine are hot.Currently bikeless
