Front fairing mounting, high revving tranny?

I have been reading posts for a couple hours now, and still need help! I just bought this bike and am trying to put it back together. The bike is a 1986 GS550 ES, and I have had it less than a week. This is my first bike.

My first big problem is my front fairing mount. When I bought it, the main bracket was jerry rigged to the fork/handlebar assembly. I am trying to mount it properly, but it does not seem to fit. Is there a piece that I am missing or what? (Pics would help!)

My other question, was touched on in other posts, but not much. The bike has a 6 speed tranny, but on the highway, I can only get up to about 65-70, and that is PAST redline (65 puts me about 11,500 to 12,000 RPM)! Is this typical for this bike, and is there anything I can do to remedy it?

Does the bike sound like it's red lining? Sounds like there's something wrong with either your rpm cable or guage.

      redlining

I am not exactly sure what a redlining bike engine sounds like, but if I had to guess I would say it is redlining.

        Perhaps the clutch is slipping?

That sounds more probable if the motor is red lining.

I will look into the clutch, although I think it feels fine. I am going to try to get it over to my local shop today anyway.

Did you check if its got stock gearing (sprockets) should be 14/48.

I know the rear sprocket is 48, but I am not sure about the front. I am going to try to pull the clutch apart on saturday, as I do not have a place around here that sells the gasket to put the cover back on.

How many times did you shift?
                  Ok just kidding.

If it's revving that high either the gearing has been changed radically or the clutch is slipping badly.

If you're in say 3/rd gear around 30-35 and twist the throttle hard, does the engine really spin up and not much in the way of acceleration happens?
if yes, the clutch is slipping.

Great bike, don't give up on it!
