    just bought a gs850 1980 model

Hi all, just purchased a gs850 1980 model, with shaft drive. can anyone tell me about some area's of concern on this model, especially with the shaft drive???

oh, oh, lets not start another shaft vs chain debate.

You may hear about shaft drives being unrelaible, but that is if the splines are not lubed/greased (not to be confused with the gear oil in the gear drive). Should be greased whenever have occassion to remove the rear wheel. I just emailed you micrfische screen captures and some photos I have of the rear hub/splines. Searc and you will find more postings about this subject.

Other thing you may want to check is the charging voltage. Get a volt-ohm meter (if you dont have one, get one, you may need it in next couple years).

Hey, were you located? Could have sold you my 80 GS850G that is for sale, pictures here in the for sale section (although I have a buyer, sale pending).

    Pictures - we want pictures!

I do Own an 80 GS850G and it is a Great Bike. I haven't had Any Drivetrain Issues at All. I do get a Small Oil Weep at the Right Front of the Cylinder Head which Goes away when I Re torque the Head Bolts on that Side. Not enough of an Issue to do a Head Removal Yet. The Fact is that these Bikes have the Reputation as the Best of a Bullet Proof Breed and there are several folks Here with High Mileage 850's that will Testify to the Same. Welcome to the GSR and Enjoy the Bike!:-D
        sigpic2002 KLR650 Ugly but fun!
2001 KLR650 too pretty to get dirty

Life is a balancing act, enjoy every day, "later" will come sooner than you think. Denying yourself joy now betting you will have health and money to enjoy life later is a bad bet.

One of the best shaft drives in the industry. Grease the splines when you change rear tires, and you'll have no trouble. Except for the marginal charging system, they are pretty bullet proof.
