    flat spot off idle?

hello again venerable forum members. trust everyone is enjoying their summer and putting lots of miles on their trusty GS'S! as the title would suggest, i have an annoying flat spot when i try to twist the throttle hard coming out of a corner or leaving a stoplight. i've modified my riding style to compensate, but it does get annoying at times. at all speeds above a jog it pulls like a freight train, especially at high (70 MPH+) speed and i have absolutely no complaints about it's( 1980 GS750E) road manners. i've set the floats as per spec, set the valve clearances and synched the carbs with my mercury sticks. the only fly in the ointment is that i'm using an airfilter box from a gs1000 and guessing at the number of openings required to give best performance. and again, at any speed past 10 mph it performs very well indeed. any thoughts? oh, and one more thing. it won't redline, it usually peters off around 8500 rpm ( redline is 9500 rpm)

Although you are probably hoping for an authoritative reply by Keith, here's my 2 cents.

If you are having carb issues, you will get beat about the head & shoulders with large construction timbers if you have not checked valve clearances, cleaned the carbs, synced 'em, ignition timing, etc. You have been here before, you know the drill - and it is correct.

The only quick fix I could suggest is to adjust the idle air screws - assuming you have removed the plugs covering them (80? I think they had the plugs covering them).

Adjust for highest idle, and then if that doesn't help, try a 1/4-1/2 turn in each direction & see if it makes a difference.

Other easy fix possibilities - air leaks, or a really dirty air filter.

After that, you are looking at a carb removal & cleanout job before anything else (I think - the real experts will probably correct me if I am wrong).

flat spot on my `80 750E

yeah you're right, i'll have to fork over for a stock airbox for the bike. i'll add that to my list of things to do over the winter along with replacing the fork seals, new seat cover, etc. i've also began to mull over the idea of moving up to an 1100 or 1150EF model ( mid eighties). anybody reading this have any particular favorite 1100 or 1150 models to recommend?

          Well you can't beat the Katana 1100 -- but I'm biased! ;-)
