    YB14L-A2 battery versus 12N14-3A

I need a new battery for my bike. My shop wants to sell me the 12N14-3A which is supposedly a perfect replacement for the YB14L-A2. The YB14L-A2 being the one that is listed for the GS1100G. Are these two indeed completely interchangeable, and if not, what is the difference between these two ?

    Thanks,

    DP

As far as the user is concerned, probably just the letters.

Isn't the "YB" a YUASA battery part number? And therefor shouldn't the generic battery number should be something like 12N14-LA-2?

The -3A has the special low acid sensor provision. (and is an expensive battery)

I run the YB14, and have my acid probe wire grounded to the frame to keep the warning light out.

A 12N14-3A is a generic battery of the same exterior size as the OEM YB14L-A2. It will work as a replacement, but it is usually does not have the quality, life, and power of a higher grade battery. Unless you want to pay extra for a sensor (I wouldn't), if I were to buy a flooded (with filler caps) battery I would opt for a CB14L-A2 if you can find one. It should have more power and last longer than a 12N14-3A.

Lastly, I wouldn't buy a battery from a dealer, as you are sure to be overcharged. Shop around for availability and better prices. I would also consider buying a sealed AGM battery, which although it costs a bit more is the state of the art for reliabililty, no maintenance, and long life.

thanks, I'll check around to see what's available over here. I'm not sure they have the CB type for sale here . And indeed, UPS delivery would probably be somewhat expensive :-D

LOL! I didn't notice that he was in Belgium! Nonetheless, I'm hoping the "Big Crank" is known the world over and he can get one - they're great!
