Cam chain check
How do you check if the cam chain is tensioned correctly? I have to replace the gasket for the cam chain tensioner and I have read that after removing it, they usually have to be readjusted.

Your cam chain tensioner is automatic and spring loaded. Before you take it off you have to lock it in place or it will pop into your enging. On the side or the tensioner there is a lock nut with a slotted screw in the center. Loosen the nut and tighten the screw. This will lock the tensioner. Now you can remove it. Now you have to cock it before reinstalling it. First loosen the screw in the center of the lock nut. With the flat side of the piston facing the screw push in the piston while turning the knurled knob. You will feel the piston moving with the knob. When its in as far as it will go tighten the screw to lock the piston. Install the tensioner. Release the piston by backing out the screw a quarter turn. You will hear it pop out. Tighten the lock nut and that's it.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
