    Oil leak, two questions.

About a month and half ago I had changed the oil to Rotella 5w40 synthetic. Before this I had read the many discussion on using synth oil, some positive, some not so positive. One of the negative comments was the appearance of oil leaks after switching to synth oil. After switching to synth I did notice that the clutch chatter was reduced some, not completely but it was better and no noticeable leaks (additional leaks) until now.

When I did this I did already have a slight valve cover leak. Now a month and half later the valve covers are leaking a whole lot more than before. I have it scheduled to go in for new valve cover gaskets, and valve adjustment at the same time. Here are my questions:

    a) Do you think that the valve cover leak becoming worse is due to the change to synth oil, or just because it was bound to get worse as time went on?
    b) When the new valve cover gasket is installed do you think I should switch back to regular oil or should the new gasket take care of the problem?

Let me know what you experienced GSR’s think about this.

    Thanks,
    Steve

I had cleaned the engine up real nice, dried it off and parked it in the garage.

Just sitting there it leaks, nice clean oil right down the top fin under or near both cam covers on the left side. This is with the bike on the kick stand leaning. I clean it off and it comes back.

Any imput on this would be appreciated.

I think you said you were going to get the valves adjusted but at any rate when they or you replace the valve cover gasket look at it and you'll be able to see why its leaking. Just take your time and look at everything real close.

Synthetic oil does not cause leaks. Faulty gaskets cause leaks. The only reason the original dino oil did not leak was it allowed enough sludge build up in the engine so as to act as a stop leak compound. Keep the synthetic and go with new gaskets. You needed them anyhow. :-)

The good thing about a bike that leaks oil is that at least you know there is some oil in there.:-D
