Oil cooler Install

Yes I think everything is a lot clearer than it was for me in the beginning. I'd like to thank everyone for replying on this matter. Thanks Guys  Now all I have to do is find an 1150 oil filter cover and I'll be in business.

In an earlier thread http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/viewtopic.php?t=3321 I asked about removing the oilcooler on my 1150, but I never understood, what the "By-pass" on the http://medlem.spray.se/ocorsagsi/Oil1GS1150.jpg was, so I cancelled the removing of the cooler.

If I understand correct now, I can remove the cooler if I also change the Oilfilter "cup" to a cup from an 1100 ?

The "By-pass" on the http://medlem.spray.se/ocorsagsi/Oil1GS1150.jpg is there letter B is on http://medlem.spray.se/ocorsagsi/Oil5GS1150.jpg ?

Have I now understod correct, and can I safely remove the cooler??

Yes, if you use the cover from an 1100. Do not remove the oil cooler from an 1150 motor without the 1100 cover. There is a restrictor in the 1150 cover which forces more oil to the cooler - essentially 90+% of it. The only oil you would get would be the little bit that goes through the bypass.

The letter "B" on your diagram is the bypass - teeny little guy. Perhaps it's there to provide "just enuff" oil when someone inadvertantly removes the cooler and plugs the holes.

Never thought to ask - but if you want an 1100 cover - I would trade you mine for the 1150 you have straight up. Postage would be your only investment.

I live in Colorado and the summers here get hot. I'm going to use a cooler.

Thanks for your reply and offer,

But I'm an "original" freak and have keeped all stock parts to the bike, which from the beginning was an GSX 1100 EF.

I like the possibilty to build back into original shape, when I repainted it I bought all parts that should be painted from a junk yard and still have the original.

Gentlemen,
Thank you , one and all for your solution of my oil cooler installation by the dealer. I had them mount a GS1150 oil cooler but it stayed cool to the touch. I had asked about it last year in this forum but it took awhile before the solution was determined. I ordered an 1150 oil filter cover and now everything works fine....as fine as it can be with three foot of snow outside.
Now I'm looking for answers to installing a headlamp relay and keeping the "headlight out" lamp if for no other reason than to indicate the relay coil situation.

I don't mean to divert the conversation but what are the benefits of installing an oil cooler. I mean real world benefits.  Also, could a 850G benefit from an aftermarket cooler. Yes I know I don't know anything but humor me :)

As I understand, not only will the oil be able to cool the engine better but it will also retain it's viscosity. The cooling is essential for the oil cooled electrical charging system and will provide fewer breakdowns. It helps the transmission work better, too.

i have a few questions about a oil cooler, its a 78 gs 400...if i installed an oil cooler would it be better to direct all the oil through it or a little i think alot but i want ur opinion , and also if i mounted on fans to the oil cooler would it be better to have them turn on and off with a temp switch or constant running, also whats the point of a oil thermostate if u dont have one isnt it better because ur not giving the oil a fast chance to get hot................oh and u should see the way im installing mine

theres a problem i have just come up with since my bike has roller bearings doesnt this mean it has a lower pressure pump.....can i still use an oil cooler...i was thinking of a way to use the oil cover with the filter inside but still direct all of the oil out of the nipple on the bottom and go through the cooler but i dont know if i can do it now....one time i was revving the engine and the side clutch cover was missing and the clutch push pin flew out and sprayed oil everywhere....not exactly that low pressure is it

Ohh ic thanks for ur reply...but i am really confused what is that aluminum block with two hoses all about on the oil coolers it mount by the starter cover right behind the cylinders is that where it gets oil or somthing how?....i thaught they used the in and out fittings inside the oil filter cover

that link i sent is a link for the 4 cylinder 8 valve gs, the oil filter cover oil adapter is for the 4 cylinder 16 valve motor.

ok so if i were to oil cool my gs400 what would i have to do, its a 4 valve.....on that 4 clylinder one what does that thing do on top of the engine does it get oil from the case somhow or what, another thing on my engione there is a big chrome nut on the stator cover that leads into the oil passages going to the head whats that for could i use that to push cooled oil into?

BASICALLY ALLLLL I WANT TO KNOW IS-lets say my bike was a 1978 gs400...where would i get the oil from to go to the cooler and where would i return it to?

there should be a big plastic nut thing with a wire hooked to it, under the carbs, that is your oil pressure switch, the swithc is mount to a metal plate. if you remove the plate and switch you will see a tower with a big hole in the middle, that is where oil is pumped out of (your output port) you will also see two little holes one in the front of the tower and one behind the tower. both of these are your input ports ( they draw the oil back into the engine) pic one to use most adapters feed the oil over the back hole and the oil would fill the space and be sucked in by both holes. so you need to get oil out of your output port and feed it back to the input port. thats why you need a adapter and you can't buy one they are rare. this is how the 8 valve 4 cly bikes work, i am not sure about twins, can you take a picture of the area under the carbs. take off your oil pressure switch plate and see what i am talking about. there should be a rubber oil as a gasket so you can put it back no problem.

my engine doesnt have anything in that area i dont even think it had a oil pressure switch all there was is a starter cover and on the tub the cam chain tenshener theres a metal nut a little ways back but its for the shifter reel inside theres a spring with a metal ball pushing on the grooves inside ...other wise theres the gear indicator on the side and the only nut is on the stator cover it goes into the oil passages but i dont even know what its for my engine is strange in the manual it shows two covers on the bottom my has one just for the oil filter.

i'm sorry you have complettly lost, i will need some pis to work, i will try to look at bike bandit and se eif they have some engine diagrams

my engine doesnt have anything in that area that you stated...the only thing i can find is a big chrome nut on the stator cover that leads into a oil journal....i dont know what thats for...on the top under the carbs there is nothing but a starter cover

here first timer a picture for the post above the chrome nut the leads into the oil passage im guessing up the studs to the head?

Do you think that could be used for a in or out port and theres a nut on the bottom of the oil filter cover can that be used for in or out??
Please help me out here i just want to know if its possible to install an oil cooler on my bike.
