does dipping carbs realy clean out all the little passages ?

1981 gs400L all stock with 23,000 km

The bike has been sitting for about 2 years , without stabil in the gas

So i took the carbs off and cleaned them,

tryed the bike and had no power at all and the choke didn't work

rebuilt them again, this time paying attention to all parts and found that the choke sliders weren't aligned , so one opens before the other, easy fix.

The main jets were cloged again, must be some gunk filtering down,

So i cleaned them again and the needle jets, pilot jets ....

I cleaned everything except actualy dunking the carb bodies for the fourth time !

I can't find Chem Dip around here, so i'm looking for the Gunk dip.


My question is: does the dunking actualy clean out the small passages well?

Or does this have to be repeated along with blowing compressed air and carb cleaner through them a few times ?

I don't think you need to dip the carbs, you just need to get all the passages clean. When I clean carbs I get a couple of jumbo sized cans of spray carb cleaner and go at it. The key is to remove all the small jets and needles - they often are located down in a recessed passage somewhere so you really need to look close. A small wire helps to poke through the gunk plugging pilot jets and such so use a little imagination and get everything cleaned out. You can always use a little of the spray in a cup to soak the jets as well.

All this said, I suppose if the carbs are REALLY old and gunked up, the dip is appropriate.

I have gotten carbs cleaned pretty good with just a can of spray carb cleaner, some thin gauge wire and a can of compressed air. However, you never really know if you have gotten everything clean, 100%. With a carb dip, you can be pretty sure everything gets cleaned well.

Compressed air is also a wonderful thing to blow out the passages with. If you don't have a compressor, the cans of air (or whatever it is) used to clean off computer keyboards and such will work okay. The only thing I've noticed with them is the pressure drops dramatically if you blast for more than a few seconds. The can gets cold and you have to wait until it warms up again to get full power.

in my opinion dipping your carbs is second only to ultra sonic cleaning. dip is like 10 times stronger then carb spray, just take the carbs totally apart let them sit for like 12 hours and they should be spotless. then take a wire poke all the holes and spray them all out with carb spray. those carbs should be so clean you can eat off them. also don't forget to add a inline fuel filter to help keep crap from the tank getting into the carbs.

After reading your post, you should do a full carb dip if at all possible. Some guys seem to have had success with carb spray, but the dip is so superior that if you can pull it off you should do it.

I've used the air cans too, but if possible use a real compressor and get a rubber tipped end that you can stick into the small passage and really blow them out.

After that you can do your carb work without wondering....did I really get it clean?

I have the carbs tore down to nothing, and every individual part that can be removed, Is .

Just to give you an idea of how resilient the gunk actual is, my main jets are 117.5, after cleaning them and soaking them in carb cleaner, there was still enought varnish on them to drop the size of the jet to about a 70.0 but it looked completely clean. After poking the proper 117.5 size jet cleaner needle through it , the hole nearly doubled in size !

the pilot jets where the same ,
and the jet needle was one solid chunk,

so far with just carb cleaner its just not enough,

Whats this talk about boilling the carb body's ?
