    Here's how I do it.

    1. Warm up the bike.
    2. Pull the plugs
    3. Insert your tester in plug hole
    4. THROTTLE MUST BE WIDE OPEN
    5. Hit starter button and go through 5 or so compression cycles.
    6. Do this for each cylinder.
    7. Done.

You need to know that your valves are adjusted correctly in order to get readings that are helpful. If you can't warm up the bike, you can get cold readings as well....better than nothing.

if your compressions low, put a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder. If it goes up, your rings need to be replaced. If its uneffected, its your valves.
