    Voltmeter vs. Ammeter

I would like to install an analog(dial type) guage on my 81 GS 850G to monitor the charging system and observe the effects of various lights & accessories coming into play & off as well as basic charging info. Just put a Electrex stator & R/R on the bike recently.

    1. Would I be better off with a volt meter or ammeter?

    2. If ammeter would would be the highest numerical reading I need (20, 30, or more on the +/- scale?

Thanks to the electrical savant out there!

Ammeters are much more difficult to install... you have to run EVERY AMP thru them in order to get a true reading... Voltmeters can tell you easily (just about anywhere) in the bike's electrical system what your voltage is... which is the key to knowing if you have juice or not. Just charging does not mean the battery is saving that energy.

Do the voltmeter thing. All-around better.
