Ok...So, I cannot find a stock air boot for a 82 650GL. I did find an 81 though, but....I'm not sure whether it fits. I'm working that angle, but on first inspection...I don't think it does.

I have heard I can use regular air filters and just rejet the bike.

    But.....

Is rejetting hard? Are there instructions someplace to do it. I'm afraid if I don't...I'll never get the bike to run.

Don't even think about not using the stock airbox - you clearly don't have the jetting know-how. Even many "experts" recommend not deviating from the stock set-up. If you proceed anyway, you'll be forced to become an expert through trial-and-error.

i did replace stock airbox on a 1980 gs1100 stock exhaust with 4 filterpod and i have a hard time tuning it until i buy a dynojet kit. when you remove the stock airbox you increase the airflow ,the huge stock needle cant supply enough gas to match increased airflow. you dont have to change idle circuit jetting, only the needle and main jet and drill a passage in the slide.now it is working very well
      good luck

If I cannot find an air box....Then I have 2 options:

        1) Sell the bike as parts.
        2) Rejet.

If you look on Bike Bandit, the 81GL and the 82GL carry the same part numbers. So I suspect that it will fit if it came from a GL model.
If you choose to go with pods, and thus need to rejet, check with wiredgeorge at http://www.wgcarbs.com/
He will offer advice for free as far as settings.
Jets and such are available at http://www.z1enterprises.com/
