Getting rust off of gas cap
Hi everyone. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the rust of a an old gas cap? Also, I just cleaned my carb on my 78 GS400 and noticed there was an o-ring on one pilot air screw and not the other. I tried to order some replacements from the suzuki dealer, but their screen as well as my manual do not show an o-ring with the screw. Is it necessary? Thanks.

YES! The o-ring is VERY necessary. Why on earth would it be there if it weren't? And it's very well documented that a missing, cracked, or ill-fitting o-ring creates a problem. There are lots of other o-rings and other teensy tiny widgets in your carbs, and they are all absolutely necessary.
One of Robert Barr's kits will likely contain what you need. Probably double the quantity that you need, actually:
Carb kits will also contain this o-ring, but many, including myself, have encountered lots of problems stemming from poor quality parts in the kits. YMMV. Here are a couple of sources:

As far as the rusty gas gap, this stuff might be worth a try. Be aware that most of your gas cap innards are made of a metal other than iron or steel, probably a zinc alloy. You'll need to read the label to make sure it won't hurt other metals or the plastic and rubber parts.
It's available at Autozone.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
