Regulator/Rectifier
I know that the R/R on GS750s had problems, but does the R/R on the '79 GS1000L have the same trouble? If so, I'm definitely going to the Electrex solution. Probably a Dyna S and the Dyna coils, too. Which Dyna coils go with the Dyna S, the 3 ohm or the 5 ohm?

You don't have to go swapping out the reg/rec if it's working ok. Run a heavy earth (ground) from the (-) battery terminal to one of the bolts on the reg/rec.

Thanks, guys. I had an Electrex R/R on my GS750 and had no problems in 43,000 miles. The Stator and Rotor seemed robust enough. I guess I'll try the heavy duty jumper and see what happens. The bike only has 7800 miles on it and has always been garaged so I don't think it's going to be too worn out.

Yes the one I used to replace the R/R on mine was a single piece.
IT WAS SIMPLE TO DO THIS...
I posted the entire thing back 6 months ago.
Here is my experience w/ the swap of the old REG REC with the 1 piece ELECTRIX ..
I have 2 posts on this --
