What does my air cleaner look like? 79 GS1k

My "new" 79 GS 1000 has no air cleaner - i guess. It has the air distrubution box which the carbs all connect to and breathe from, but the box is empty and it has a round hole going to the wide open space under the seat. I've heard they run poorly or not at all without the filter.
So where does the air filter go? What does it look like? Is there more missing here than just the filter? Am I an idiot? Don't answer that one. I'll try to post a picture of the vast emptiness in the morning.
    On the bike I mean.

On my 650 the air filter fits snug against the "gaping hole" and it held in place by metal brackets above and below the hole. A tab on the filter slides into the bottom bracket and another tab is secured to the top bracket with a screw. The filter (when looked at from the side) is... somewhat kidney shaped (must be something better to compare it to... ;-)). It has an opening on one side that mates with the gaping hole and the actual foam is wrapped around the outside edge of the "kidney" and held in place with a metal strip. The gaping hole which goes to the carb runners has a rubber gasket to seal against the filter. The lid to the filter box has a rear-facing "snorkel".

Sounds like you're just missing the filter. You might be able to find an OEM one on eBay or I've seen K&N aftermarket ones that fit in the stock airbox. They say the aftermarket replacement does not require a rejetting (but pods, which replace the hole OEM airbox do).

This is from the N and EN model, but the L and S are very similar - http://alpha-sports.com/spst/1979%20GS1000N,EN/01.htm
