    82 GS650E Dyna S Question

    I have a 1982 GS650E and I am trying to figure out if I can install a DYNA S ignition on this bike. I have emailed Dyna & z1enterprises.com and both say there isn't a model for this bike. However crc2onlinecatalog.com list one on their site, I called them and they don't know which model it is DS3-1 or DS3-2. All he could tell me was it's their DYNA01. The part numbers for the signal generator are the same in the Suzuki lookup for the GS650E and the GS550 & GS850. I'm confused and wanted to see if anyone has installed a Dyna S on a GS650E and if so which model.

    Z1 states that a stamp of either ND or KD will be on the advance unit. I don't see it, I've attached a couple of pics to see if that will help identify my ignition type. As far as I know this bike is all original, I'm the second owner, the first let it sit for about 9 years.





    Thanks for any help identifying which system this is. I really don't want to spend $120+ to get the wrong part.

    You are in luck! I wish somebody was around to give me a definite answer when I was in EXACTLY your position a week or two ago with my 650E! ;-)

    The DS3-1 is almost a perfect direct bolt-on for your stock Kokusan mechanical advance and timing cavity/cover. Only caveat is you'll need a washer or something as a spacer when you put on the new Dyna rotor. Make sure you put the spacer on the *outside* (to push the rotor in, towards the crank) or the magnet won't line up well with the pickups, and make sure it's not something too grippy or thick that it'll stop the advance from moving the rotor on the shaft (you can turn it with your hand and make sure it rotates through its advance travel easily). Don't neglect the spacer -- you won't get a reliable spark with the rotor traveling freely in and out on the shaft.

    As for wiring, the red wire from the Dyna goes to the orange from the stock igniter connector, and white and black from the Dyna go to white and black on the same (I'm ignoring the stripe colors since I don't remember them and there's only one each mostly black, white, and orange wire anyway). I just yanked the wires out of the stock connector, twisted them to the Dyna wires, and threw some wire nuts on (except for the red wire, which comes with a splicing connector thingy).

    Don't forget to put the thin aluminum timing bracket back in so you can throw a timing light on it -- I didn't have any luck with the non-timing light method (very difficult to rotate the crank while keeping the rotor advanced). The timing bracket also helps push the pickup plate out so the rotor lines up better.

    It's a _really_ easy install and the piece-of-mind that comes with replacing the crappy stock ignition is priceless IMHO.

        Thanks for the quick reply to this post. That was the model I thought I needed to get, but was hoping someone out there had some experience.

        I'll be ordering the DS3-1 later this week.

            DS3-1 installed and just as you said, it fit perfectly, just needed a spacer washer on the outside of the rotor. She started right up, timed with a timing light, it's definately running more smoothly now.

                Spacer question

                I put my Dyna S on the bike last night-- (1981 GS550L). Without the spacer, i've got around 3/16ths inch of play in the rotor when everything is tightened up. If i put the spacer on and tighten it all up, then the rotor won't turn. So I'm guessing that i either need to come up with a thinner spacer or do without... doing without seems like its going to make me not get good signal. Suggestions?

                  I found that I *did* need a spacer in order to get reliable spark. Apparently that magnet on the rotor needs to line up exactly with the coil pickups or it'll miss.

                  If your spacer is too thick and the rotor binds against it, then the mechanical advance won't work which is Very Bad. Just find something thinner and make sure it's not too rubbery so it "grabs" the rotor too much. Also be sure to lube it up somehow. Check out the fasteners isle at your local hardware store. I ended up with a rubber washer I had laying around, and I *think* it's turning freely. What I'd really like to have is a nylon washer or something that will definitely not bind up. The trick is getting something big enough/stretchy enough to fit over the tangs on the end of the shaft without being too big and sloppy.

                      If you find the perfect spacer and have an extra, would you slap one in an envelope and send it to me? Teflon sounds like a good solution. I'm a bit nervous about my rubber washer binding, but haven't had the initiative to keep up the search. ;-) I'll PayPal you a few bucks for your trouble!
