    Damn. Starting problem back. damn.

    Hi all.

I've got a road trip i'd like to go on next week, and this problem starts now. :?

    1980 GS 850 w/ 70700km.

    winter: new battery
2005: Replaced r/r and stator. shortly after, had an accident
winter: replaced clutch plates+springs, and horn+headlight relays, etc.
2006: Bike up and running, put about 9000km on so far this year.

Thursday: left bike outside previous night. lots of condensation. cold night. Had to bump start bike.
    Friday: Fine. Fresh oil+filter change
    Sat: no riding
Sun: another cold night. doesnt start up. hard time bump starting (after i drained the battery nearly)

Problem: Bike now does not start w/o a bump start. Even after taking a decent ride on the highway to charge up the battery, it doesn't start up on its own. fuses fine.

    Possible Cause(s) Battery, Stator, r/r.

I will leave my battery on the charger for the next 24 hours, and see what reading i get. I will have to test the damned electrical crap again , i guess.

The reason I think it might be the battery, is that even before this, i left the bike parked one weekend (warm temp.) and it would not start after w/o bump.

The bike is hard to start if i have it in 1st instead of neutral. if i move it around a bit before i park it for the night, it starts fine in whatever gear. could the clutch be affecting things? i didnt have a torque wrench when tightening the bolts back on.....

I'm hoping i dont have to replace the dang r/r again. maybe my accident screwed things up?.....

    battery

if u can check the acid in the battery if its low u can add water to it and see if that helps.

you never mentioned did you check for spark. you did say condensation. I am assuming since you have so many post you allready checked for spark? could be a simple thing as little as that. Question why dont you use a car battry not attached too the car too jump start it? Why do the manual bump thing.

Its a sealed battery. its kinda no-name though (deka?)

I'll try my brothers bikes battery, and see if thats the problem. no ...i havent checked for spark. i assumed it was ok, since it runs good normally.
plugs looked a little black, but a lot of idling before i shut it down previously.

also, i have doubts whether its the r/r , because its been running fine the whole summer. however, then i do see that the plastics around the diodes from the r/r to the harness are black on one. I had the r/r and stator done at a mechanic, and the ground hookup on the r/r is solid, but looks weird..... DANG!

I'll check for spark tonight. thanks for any tips.

Update: After I checked the wires , pulled some apart, and back together, it started up fine.

the big red one from the stator was a bit loose, so maybe that was it? I'm going to get on top of things though...

Hopefully it starts tommorow morning. the nights are getting pretty chilly around here.

            Update:

This problem is absolutely retarded: Didnt start sunday morning.

I parked my bike at work. tried to start after the day....no go.

i then bump it, and go to a night class for 3+ hours, leaving it outside in cool whether. expecting the worst, it starts up fine!

Would this be the battery losing charge? It still turns over and tries to start fine ...

has too be a loose wire somewhere. could be in the plugs themselves. could be in the coils connecting too the ingnition.

              has too be wires

yeah, i tested for spark last night. seems good on both coils. (tested 1 & 2)

however in the process, im a retard, and i screwed up the thread on my #2 spark plug hole

i cant believe i did it. its in now, but ive definitely screwed up the thread somehow...

I'll try and nail down if its a loose spark plug wire to the coils, or from coils to ignition. could be it i suppose....still stock .
