80 gs 1000-where is main fuse?

I am at my wits end.I had started putting a fairing on, had to hook their wires to the suzuki wires.Now push the starter button nothing happens.Looks like i have all the wires connected where they should be except for one orange wire with blue stripe and one solid yellow wire.I thought maybe a fuse was blown.I took the headlight fuse out that was working and one at a time put the other fuses in its place.One of them didnt make the headlight come on so i figured that was part of the problem.I know this is stupid but i had the ignition key on while i was doing this,so now everything i had working is not working.I figured i blew the main fuse in its attempt to protect the bike from me.Where is it located?My starter rely turns the motor over by sticking a scredriver across the posts.Any and all help will be appreciated.Except for 'refer to your service manual".Its a clymer and doesnt show where the main fuse is located.My bike ran and started absolutely perfectly before i started all this.it is a 1980 gs 1000L.

The main fuse is a 15A fuse, second from the bottom. The bottom fuse is for accessories.

If your fuse box still has the cover, one can faintly see which fuse is for what on it. I discovered this while cleaning it, buried under dirt and film. Good luck!

My fuse box doesnt have a cover.I replaced the fuses today, and all the lights and so forth started working again, only now i have a new problem.Now the headlight and instrument lights(neutral,fuel gauge,etc) come on without even having the key in the ignition.I put fuses in some empty slots that didnt have them before and maybe that is the problem.I am going crazy with this,a good bike that cant be ridden.

The main fuse is a 15A fuse, second from the bottom. The bottom fuse is for accessories.

I replaced the fuses,i put some in that looked to never been there, somd slots at the bottom.Now my headlight,fuel gauge,neutral light come in without even having the key in the ignition.I had to disconnect the battery.I dont know what to do.I have a 1400 dollar fairing on a bike that wont run.

It sounds like you've got some wires crossed when you did the fairing hookup. The yellow wire on a GS1100 wiring chart is the high beam, and a yellow/white wire supplies the lights. The orange/blue wire is from the turn signal switch and connects to the speedometer for the automatic turn signal cancelling device.

The top fuse is the lights, starts as a red/orange wire at the fuse box and connects to the yellow/white wire.

The second fuse from the top is the signals fuse, and starts as a green/orange wire. It is connected to the fuel gauge and neutral indicator.

The third fuse from the top is the ignition fuse, and starts as a orange/white wire. It connects to the kill switch and starter button, where it connects to a green/yellow wire going to the clutch disconnect switch and then to the starter relay.

The fourth fuse from the top is the main fuse and starts as a red wire. The main fuse is 15A, and all the rest are 10A. The red wire coming from the main fuse runs to the ignition switch, where it activates an orange wire when the ignition is turned on. The orange wire runs all the back to the fuse box and activates the lights, signals, and ignition fuses when the ignition is turned on.

The fifth fuse from the top (on the bottom) is the accessory fuse, sometimes called "power source". It is fed directly from the main fuse and does not require the ignition to be turned on to be active. The terminals at the bottom of the fuse box are connected to the accessory fuse and may be used for any extra electrical connections that are not required to go through a switch.

The wiring codes were taken from my Clymer manual. You should have a wiring diagram in the back of your Clymer manual.

NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT!!!THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! I GOT THE FUSE PROBLEM FIXED TODAY,IGOT THE BIKE TO START AFTER REPLACING THE FUSES AND USING A SCREDRIVER ACROSS THE TERMINALS OF THE STARTER RELAY.I GUESS IT IS BROKE.I APPRECIATE ALL YOUR INPUT.A LOT!
