    Ignition question

I have a 1984 GS550ES with a blown igniter box. As the parts for this bike are expensive and somewhat hard to find, I was wondering if it is feasible to switch the ignition system over to the system from another bike. It seems that if the signal generator is working, any ignition from a similar bike might work. Is there anything that would prevent this from working? Dyna does not make a replacement ignition for this bike and say they have no plans to start making it.

Thanks in advance for any advice, Brad

They have many parts that do not show on their web site, so a call is manditory.
      Good luck.

I think the ignitor from a 650 is the same, just wired differently at the connector. COmpare part numbers and look at the wires, they are somply soldered onto the ignitor.

Depends on how far you want to go. 650G and 650L models are common enough where you could find a ignitor easier and try it. You don't have anything to lose at this point.

Get a Dyna S -- save money and replace the crappy stock ignition completely. z1 has 'em for $120 if you stick with the stock coils. With your year of bike, you may need to find a mechanical timing advance unit from an older bike first. Lots of info on all this if you do a search.
