A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

 Hi there all,

Here is a wee list o my problems for my GS550ET (1980 V Plate).
The old girl won't open up between mid and top end range, bogs down but goes again but not fast. When i pull out the choke she takes of for a few seconds then slow down again, nothing over 60mph.
I have done the usual, stripped the carbs, petcock, stripped down the cylinder block and regrounded the valves, compression about 110 on all cylinders now. I have also put in new 'o' rings in all the carbs, the main jet needle is now up on to the highest notch. It seams to be a fuel problem but as i have said previously carbs are in good condition.

There is a 4 in 1 exhaust system on the bike of which the details are: Motad Type M5S Fab No 4390. The original jets are still in the carbs, so maybe i was thinking with a 4 in 1 exhaust system, will i need to put in bigger main jets/needles?
There is also a Boyers Bransden Electronic Ignition sysytem fitted which seems to be set ok.
The bike starts 1st time and revs up good until about 5500revs but when i take her out on the road not so good.
Does the ignition timming have anything to do with the top end performance?
Read the manuals and we have followed the instruction to the letter.
Now at my wits ends on getting the old girl to run good.
Help is required.

Either please reply or if you want give me an e-mail.
Yours waiting at the side of the road.

Free flow exhaust pipes require larger jets, the mains at least. Not sure if this will solve the problem completly but it's a start.

You added more air with the free flowing 4-1 pipes and need to compensate with more fuel, mostly with the main jet. Do a search for plug chops and tune your needle and main jet in by reading your spark plugs.
