    Transmission Issue?

If anyone can help I appreciate it in advance...
I have an 83 GS750ES with approx 40k miles. I just purchased it about
2 months ago.. The deal is I can't shift into neutral when the engine is running, unless it's really warm like after about 15 minutes of riding. From
then, I can shift into neutral but only while moving. Like when approaching a stoplight I can downshift to 2nd and then pop into neutral usually, but if
I don't do that for whatever reason once I come to a stop it won't go in neutral. Or if I make it to that complete stop and downshift to first and let the clutch out to where I'm rolling approx 2-3mph/and then it will go into neutral too. It seems a strange problem to me, but I'm told an oil change might clear things up?? Also the gearshift is pretty stiff until the oil temp gets up too. Any advice or tips, or is my transmission going out?

    Thanks!

definately change the oil, is does have some effect and check for proper clutch adjustment.

I have noticed the neutral light sometimes won't come on, even though I've found neutral, unless the back wheel is turned (whether by hand on the center stand or in motion on the road). Are you sure you actually can't get in to neutral or is it just the light?

No, it's actually the gears.. I can't tell you how many times I've stalled at a stoplight just trying to see if it's only the light.. Then I usually end up push starting it because my starter switch is on the blink.

Thanks. I'll change the oil tonight and see where that takes me.

sounds like no freeplay in the clutch . Possibly a streched cable ?

I just replaced the cable with a brand new one. I also changed the oil last night. It seems to shift smoother, but still not a solution to the neutral issue..

Thanks bostrom155 I've tried to creep, lurch.. Pretty much everything I can think of.. .It's not a matter of not knowing how to release the clutch lever, I just release it too far sometimes to see if I've managed to slip it into neutral.

                    try lubing the pusher pivot

On my 78 550 I had the same problem , even after
cable replacement. I took the side cover where you can make an adjustment on the clutch push rod pivot.. and I lubed that sucker up and everything was fine and dandy until the chain jumped sprockets... bent the clutch push rod and broke the pivot at the mounting.

anyway try lubing the adjuster with a good coating of grease and see if that helps you..\\
