Straight Cut Gear
Bought a 1978 GS1000 with a bad clutch basket. When looking for a rplacement, every one I find has a bevel cut gear. Mine has a straight cut gear. Was this stock or has it been replaced? ThanksTags: None

Clutch
Thanks for the info. I keep watching E-Bay and have seen several over the last couple of months advertised as 1978 or 1979 clutch baskets but they all have had beveled gears. Sorta frustrating. I'll keep at it and hope one pops up.

GS 750 have straight cut gears but it alters the gear ratio. I think its ataller gearing. They are a differant size to the 1000 engine s it easy to see if its a 750 or a aftermarket one. Hope this helps

The 78 and 79 GS1000's all came with the helical style gears. If you have straight cut gears, they are not stock. What exactly is wrong with your existing basket??.... Your best bet is to find a 1000 basket that isn't all "ditched" out where the friction plates make contact, send it out and have your straight cut gear installed and the backing plate re-inforced and welded. Again, what exactly is wrong with your current basket???.......BadBillyB

As you said, the basket is really grooved up where the clutch plates ride on it and it looks like it has a hairline crack up one groove. The clutch engagement is really erratic, smooth one time jerky the next. The bike looked like it had 2 new looking tires on it except the back tire was worn flat. It still had the **** on it. I think the young fella that had it liked to do burnouts.
