    GS1100e Swingarm / Largest Tire Size

    Hi guys,

    What is the largest size tire I can put in this swingarm. I'm planning on building either a 4.25 spoked rim for a 160 tire, or a 5.5 spoked rim for a 180 tire. This will be on a 18" rim. I know I will have to get offset sprockets and such. I really want to get a 180 back there.

    Yes u can go bigger but why? You will over tyre the bike in doing so. Here is a pic of my 4.25x18 rim with a 140/80 x 18 BT45 Bridgestone on it. u can go to a 150 but it rubs the chain and brake stay. Hope this helps. (or confuses)

      I've got a Dunlop 170 on my '82 1100E with the stock swingarm. I'm running a 17" X 5.5" GSXR rim with the GS hub and 530 chain. That is absolutely as tight as you can go. I had to grind the frame where the passenger pegs bolt up to clear the chain. An 18" rim may have to use a narrower tire as the front of the wheel will be closer to the narrowest part of the front of the swingarm.

        for straight line use or to improve handling?


        If to improve handling what will you do for the front?

          FWIW, I just bid on and won this 2004 GSX-R 1000 complete front end (forks, brakes, rim, triples, Michelin Power Pilot tire) below. This should improve my handling and braking performance tremendously over the existing stock forks and brakes. To get this to transplant correctly, I also need to get a pair of tapered bearings for the Gixxer steering head to replace the existing roller bearings and fit my GS1000. From there, it should be a pretty much bolt-on/connect-the-cables application. If you're thinking of going this route, I'd recommend getting a complete, assembled front end as finding all the parts piecemeal for a new front end is not only a PITA, but also more expensive than buying the front end as a complete unit.

          I'm replacing the rear end too with a GS1100 swingarm, GSXR rear brakes, a 4.5x17" rim, Koni shocks, a 530 chain conversion, and a 160 section Michelin Pilot Power tire. I'm going with the 160 instead of a wider tire because the skinnier tire allows you to flick the bike over quicker in the corners.

              Sorry guys, haven't been here for a while. Actually I'm looking to put the largest tire on this swing arm because I think it will look good. Haaaaaa. This isn't a commuter bike or anything. It's just for taking out on nice days and having a good time on. I'm not looking for a canyon carver or anything like that. It's just a fun hobby for me. Has anyone actually put a 180 size tire with a 5.5 rim on this swing arm?
