    Starting Problem

I have an issue starting my 82 GS750T. It has started great for the past few months. The other day I went to start her up and she wouldn't turn over as if the battery were dead. Head light and turn signals were bright as ever though. I was able to push start it and did manage to start it when I left work that day. I put it on the charger overnight it and in teh morning it still didn't work so I replaced the battery. Still didn't work. Push started it again and checked the stator and it is good. Turned her off and wouldn't start again. So I checked the voltage across the starter relay when starting and there was no loss there. I then changed the plugs and she fired up. Let her sit on the charged again over night. Fireed up great in the morning and again after work. Even made a few stops on the way home and started every time. Thought I had her fixed. Got up this morning and she wouldn't start again. Managed to push start her and rode to work, about an hours ride. Got to work turned her off and tried to start her again and still won't even turn, as if the battery didn't have enough juice. Any thoughts as to where I should look next?

    Could be:
    1. Faulty starter solenoid.
    2. Worn brushes in your starter motor.

If it is the brushes, is it possible to remove the starter motor without taking the tank and carb off the bike?

          THEY HAVE TO COME OFF

Good chance you've got loose/corroded wires. Check all your wire connections, especially the ground wires. I ran the solenoid ground and the r/r ground directly to the ground post on my battery-no more problems.

So I let her sit on the charger for a few hours and she is starting again. I will check my grounds tonight and see if that is the problem

Your charging system is most likely the culprit. Are you getting between 13 and 15 volts at the battery when the bike is at 5000 RPM. If not, your charging system is faulty - see other posts.

Charging system is fine I am getting about 14.5 V at 5K. After playing with it a while more I am now finding that when it won't start if I repeatedly press the starter it eventually starts up. So I think maybe its the relay or the starter motor is sticking and it takes some effort to break free

                    Yes.
                    Get yourself a Clymers/Haynes manual.
There is a plate/cover with two 7mm (I think) bolts undo those, then the two bolts (10mm) at the end of the starter motor (close to the center of the engine) and the 10mm nut holding the power cable to the motor, pull the motor up and back towards the center of the engine. Undo the two long screws holding the motor together and check the condition of the brushes etc. If blackend get some emory cloth and GENTLY sand off the black stuff.

Then reverse the process. Warning getting the starter motor back together can be a pain in the proverbial rear end but it does all fit together without any real force.

I'm sure some one will correct the errors. I have done this twice now on my 83 1100ED in the last few months and if I remeber the layout of my 82 750TZ it werent too much different.

I'm having the same problem. I thought it might be the battery, but the lights work. I though it could be this stator thing (not quite sure what that is or where it is). When I try to start my bike cold with push start, it sounds weak, so I use the kick start. Once the engine is warmed up, the push start barely works, as opposed to not at all with a cold engine. I charge it for 5-6 hours sometimes, but that's only a temporary fix. It wasn't always like this.

I had a similar problem on my Shadow, turns out I just needed to clean the contact points in my starter button. 20 minutes with some emery cloth and dielectric grease, and I never had another problem.

If it does turn out to be the brushes, the best place to get a replacement is Stocker's Starters. Can't remember the website offhand, but a Google search will turn it up. Lots cheaper than the factory. They also have complete starters if your armature's fried.

I'm a visual learner. Everyone keeps telling me to check the thingamabobber and the jiggamahoowhat but since bikes are different, I don't know where in sam hell they are. Is there some kind of diagram of where I can find the stator and starting motor on my '78 GS550E?

Don't have a visual, but the starter is under either a painted or chrome plate with two bolts on it behind the cylinders. The starter relay is under your left side cover next to your fusebox and voltage regulator.

There might be a good diagram here:

Don't know where either one of those are. Bikebandit's diagrams are hard to read.
