My 83 GS1100E exhaust questions!

OK, I'm in the process of installing a nice 4 into 1 Vance and Hines megaphone exhaust onto my 83 GS1100E. I wish that UPS man would hurry up! First off, when the stock pipes finally dropped out, (4) shims (flanges?) ended up on the floor, and if I’m reading previous archived posts correctly, those 4 shims go to the inside two pipes, the ones that had the finned clamps that actually came off the old pipes. Is this correct? So, I still don’t know what I’m supposed to do with the outside 2 pipes, where the finned clamps will not come off the original exhaust? Will those be included in the new V&H pipes, or will I basically need to find another set of finned clamps like the inner two, and also 4 more flanges to go with them, to intall on the outer 2 pipes? Can you tell I’ve never swapped out an exhaust before? Lastly, as far as exhaust gaskets, I'm assuming they all stayed in place, because nothing else fell onto the floor! Are these a "must" replace, or can they be reused? Thanks GS resources!!

Just as an FYI, MAW (Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse) has the Vance and Hines 4 into 1 listed on eBay with a Buy it Now of 298.99, but also gives you the option of submitting an offer. Well, being the cheapskate that I am, I started at 200 and went back and forth with them, and they finally accepted an offer of 241 dollars! A grand total of 267.95 shipped! Pretty hard to beat that price, I'd suggest checking them out if you in the market for a replacement exhaust for your Vintage GS!

The stock GS flange design is quite "odd". I remember the same questions when I removed my stock exhaust also. Why split bushings on only the inside pipes? Are the outside aluminum flanges permanent on the pipes? When I recieved my new MAC system, all 4 flanges are the same, and were permanantly fixed to the headers. I also recieved new bolts. Everything fit perfect. I can't really comment on V&H's, as I have never seen one up close. I am sure someone will shed some facts, as a lot of guys like the V&H.

Ah heck, I just ordered a set on ebay, 10 bucks shipped, they'll probably get there faster than my pipes anyway!!!!

Yeah, pretty screwy design by Suzuki. You shouldn't need any of your old parts, unless V&H has changed over the years. Everything is included. even the stop for the center stand. Years past they came with restrictors that go in the collector, the smaller the restrictor, the more torque it makes. The more open it is, the more high rpm horse power, but less low & mid range power it will have. I'm sure people have problems with the gaskets, but after swaping probably 25 sets of exaust, I only remember 2 leaking. But if you have them anyway, I sure would use them. By the way, I just saw a great picture of your bike, It's not close to original, but it sure looks a lot better than the original "83" "dark drab blue" with everything black original ones, like mine. Congrads, it looks great.

It's close enough to original for me, but I just had to have that 4 into 1 exhaust note, and hopefully, the better performance to go with it! Outside of the handlebars and carbs, it's pretty much original, and I've got a set of black handlebars on the way, (thanks Guyver!). I really love the "starry blue metallic" paint from 83, it looks great in person!
