    GS750 - GS1000G compatibility

1980 GS1000G, I got a spare set of cans & headers with the bike when I bought it.

I thought they looked slighty diff & on closer inspection I can see they have GS750 on the cans instead of GS1000.

They look like they will fit, the biggest difference I can see on the cans is an additional bracket near the front that I'd have to chop or bend (or leave alone if room).

The headers also look like the will fit too.

    Can anyone confirm?

Don't need to fit them yet but the headers are in better condition chromewise & my left can has a rust spot.

Out of interest the guy I bought it from used to drill small holes (around 1/8") in the end of them & also underneath as he said they last longer. The new set has holes drilled in the end too. Is this common practice? To let condensation out. The rust spot on the underside is actually at one of these points he's drilled....

The exhaust pictured came from a 77-79 GS 750. The headpipe diameter is smaller. The rear muffler mount may cause preoblems due to frame width & length differences. You should consider selling/trading it. 1000g exhausts show up every now & then.

Oh... close but no cigar then... It looks like it should fit but glad I found out now rather than later when I try to mount it (which wouldn't be till mine went through anyhow...)

So anyone want to trade? Buy? What's it worth?

If the set you have is in good shape, it should be worth at least 150-200.
Suzuki still stocks most of the parts for that exhaust, but they're EXPENSIVE!!

Did you sell them mate? The ones on my 1979 GS750E have a couple of rust holes that I patched, but nice clean ones would be better still! Cheers, Terry.

If he sold them in 11 minutes, it'd have to be some sort of record! PM him, if you haven't already.

Nope, they're still in the same box in the garage surprising enough

Let me have a measure up cause the bore on the header pipes doesn't look different to me so maybe it's a mongrel (half 750, half 1000), don't want to sell you a lemon or get rid of bits I can use. CA to Melbourne is a long way (maybe I should box them & take them to China with me next month...)

One of the front brackets (a secondary one on one side only), appears to have been slightly butchered so that makes me wonder if someone had them on something a bit different.

I'll try to get out there with the vernier for a comparison in the next couple of days & also try to take some more photo's, they are pretty good but not 100% mint, couple of very small digs/scratches & some small "spots" on the headers. Much better cond than what I have fitted on mine though.

                Cheers,

                Dan

Thanks Dan, no worries mate, I'll wait for your reply. Shipping to Oz is expensive, but there's nothing that I can buy here worth having, as we ride 12 months of the year, all cosmetic parts wear out/rust out/fall off at a much quicker rate than in the US.

I just bought a complete exhaust system for one of my Honda CB750's from a guy in the US, and the "surface mail" via USPS wasn't too bad at all. One thing I've learned since I became an Ebay junkie is to be patient, ha ha! Cheers, Terry.

I love how the pic you posted stated "Do not modify this exhaust system." That was funny considering the questions you asked.

In my experience, the only reason I know of to drill holes in the exhaust is to reduce backpressure and make 'em louder. But considering every bike I've ever owned came with either no exhaust or aftermarket, I have no idea about condensation problems with factory exhaust. Seems like riding the bike regularly (or at least running it) would get rid of any condensation problems. Drilling holes through chrome is asking for rust, which would seem to negate the whole purpose of eliminating condensation.

                      Terry,

More pics here as promised. The diameter of headers is different. Mine are 41mm these are 38mm.

Actually, I think there is a stock gs1000 exhaust on "fleabay" now....
I didn't notice what shape they were in though.
If you do a "favorite search" on what you want, they will email you when one goes up for sale.
