    Need Help GS 1980 1000G

Hi. It's great to see there is a website like this to help people. Hopefully you can help me out. I just bougt a new/old bike a few months ago. There seems to be a few problems with it. I was hoping you can help me determine what those problems are. Since money is an issue/outrageous shop prices.

1.) I noticed there is gas in the oil.

2.) Gas is comming out of the air cover on the lefy side even after I cleaned it out once.

3.) I cannot get bike to idle to is either too low or too high and it is slow returning to idle.

4.) It doen't seem to go past 6,000 rpm. There is some hesitation at start off and it back fires sometimes also.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way it is 1980 GS 1000G with a 4 into 1 Vancin hines exhaust. It look like there might have been carb work because some of the rubber groments on the carborator and some of the clamps look new.

Thanks, Mike from Cape Cod, MA.

If there is gas in the oil, change the oil. You probably left your petcock on prime. But the oil should be changed.

Make sure your carbs are clean. Check out http://www.thegsresources.com/files/...g%20Series.pdf

Also check that your petcock is working properly. On "run" no gas should flow when the engine is not running. When the engine is running, no gas should be flowing through the smaller vacuum line. You can check this by sucking on the vacuum line with the engine off. Gas should flow through the larger line, but NOT through the vacuum line.

Make sure your airbox is sealed perfectly. That makes a big difference on these bikes. Most of us use weather stipping to replace the old rotted out stock seals.

Backfiring, variable idle and lack of revs is usually an indication of a lean condition. Your 4-1 Vance and Hine will almost certainly require either re-jetting or needle adjustments if the setting are still stock. Lots of guys here can help you through that. But you need to know that your carbs are clean and synchronized, valves are adjusted correctly, good spark first.

Intake O-rings often need to be replaced. These are the O-rings that seal your intake manifolds where they are bolted on to the engine. Replacing these is basically routine maintenance you don't know when they were last replaced.

Check your plugs and let us know what they look like. The should be a light tan or grey color.

Thats not everything, but a few things to think about and look at. Welcome to the fun!

      Mike,

      Welcome to GSR.

Yep, yep, yep to what Mark said.

Your problem 1 & 2 are likley resulting for the same thing: Gas tank Pectock left on prime or petcock not working and stuck open. DOnt run it till you change oil.

Your probelm 3 are classic sysmptoms of running real lean, most likley intake air leaks, most likely the intake carb boot o-rings. Or possibly needing to rejet carbs due to aftermarket pipes.
Can check the o-rings by runniong bike, spray WD-40 with the straw, spray it right on the head where boots mate up to head, see if it gets sucked in. SOme will recommend spraying starter fluid (same place), hear if it effects idle speed.

Your problem 4, well, now you are exceeding my knolodge/experience. But need to take care of #3 first anyway.

Your avatar a pic of the GS1000, I would assume. Looks nice, how about posting that pic.
