    1981 GS850G Front Caliper Corrosion

    Hello all,
Last year I rebuilt my front calipers and the housings are servicable... but just barely. The corosion from moisture has been eating them. These items are no longer available thru Bike Bandit. Did other models use the same calipers? Maybe another source. I am reluctant to purchase used parts, thinking I may get calipers that are worse than the ones I have.

How badly pitted are the bores? I would think if it just surface , you can gently touch them up with emery cloth to remove any rough edges. If the pistons are bad, your only option is used. My dealer tells me new calipers are NLA; I had to buy a used caliper and put together the best parts from the two calipers. Should you find another source, post it for the rest of us. Good luck.

I believe the piston kit (comes with seals) is still available. Replace these parts and the caliper will be good as new. The only other thing to do is grease the sliding pins and replace the boots if they are damaged. Oh, and replace the pads as needed as well.

If the caliper is pitted a machinist can bore it out and shrink fit a stainless sleeve. End of prob.

The bore does nothing other than to hold the stationary seal and guide the piston in and out. The surface finish inside the bore is non critical so unless there are chunks missing, you are good to go. The important component is the piston itself.
