    new carbs

Does any one konw where I could get new or used carbs that WORK? for a GS550t it doesnt matter if they are from a different bike like a 650 or what ever as long as they fit and work is all I care. if you have any suggestions I would greatly appriciate them. I am a college student so the cheaper teh better. thank you

Ebay, I've found several good sets there! They just need dipped and rebuilt mostly, once and a while you'll find a set cleaned and ready to go, but you'll pay the extra price for them too!

Are you sure there is anything physically wrong with your carbs? Why not clean them? If you buy used carbs you will likely have to clean them anyway. Step by step stuff with pics here - it's not a difficult process - you just have to be organized. What issues are leading you to believe your carbs are faulty?

Did you figure out if your petcock is working properly or not yet? Do you better understand the settings and how they work now?

Carb rebuild kits are also available if any of the parts are fried, but usually, a good cleaning (pulling them apart, reassembling and adjusting to factory settings) saves the day.

Do you have a service manual? The factory service manual is said to be the best but they can be expensive. Clymer and Haynes manuals aren't as good from what I have been told, but they will help you figure things out.

I would suggest reading as much information as you can and start identifying or eliminating certain problems before you spend money on stuff that might not help solve your problems. Take your time. Describe the problems you are having to the members here to help you figure out what might be going on - be descriptive as to sounds, smells, feel, what happens when you give throttle etc, and people here will help you make good diagnostic decisions.

Get used to what all the parts are on your bike - there are a lot of them but they all work very simply. With patience and research, you'll begin to figure all of these things out, just like I have been for the past few months. I'm still blown away by how much I don't know, but when I finally understand something, the lightbulb goes on and I say "ahhh, it all makes sense now!" It's a process, and the more you learn now, the more you will be prepared down the road.

Sorry for all of the questions - I mean them more to be informative and to get you thinking, not anything you really need to answer here, but to ask yourself. I got the feeling from your other posts that you're right at the beginning point on a new frontier and since I'm not far from that point myself, I wanted to point out things that helped me so far. It's also helped that I step back when I am stumped and research and go back to the project after what I've learned sink in a little better.

agreed, cleaning the ones you've got will be the cheapest way to go.

              carb

I actually know there is now way for me to fix the problem. I was cleaning my floats. then stumbled across some thing I would have never thought. when your looking at the floats on a gs550t, the float is attached to a pin that is set between two support "towers" you could call them. one of these metal supports is broken strait threw. so only one of them is doing it's job. so now the float is getting stuck and alowing the gas to continuously flow threw it is a part that is metal and part of the carbs mold and no amount of cleaning or rebuilding seem like it would beable to reatach it.

But can't you tell I've been lurking all this time??? :-D

Hot Wax, have you checked Bike Bandit or other suppliers to see if you can get the part(s) you need for your carbs? I'd hate to see you sink $$ into a "new" set of carbs that still need as much or more attention. At least you've narrowed down the issue tho! That is a plus!

                  yeah

Yeah I looked and I dont really think that this is a part that you can just replace with out replacing one individual carb. I think that would be the only way to do it. by uncle isnt an expert but he has asportster and is a vehicle inspector and when he saw it he said that it looks like a would need to get new carbs. I realy realy dont want to get some more carbs. I am gunna ask some more people I know and see what they say. brfor I get them.

You watch, give it a couple of years and we'll be seeing the grand opening of "Miss Fab's Vintage Cycle Repair and Restoration"! And I'd do my best to be there! I know I'd love to open my own shop.....

I know it seems like jury-rigging, but as long as you can keep it level, why not stick the post back on with something like Liquid Steel? Actually, I remember a post a while back about repairing this exact same problem. Do a search and you'll find it. BTW, the reason those posts break (and I know this from experience) is that someone tried to tap or press the float pin out without supporting the outward side of the post. The carbs are simple cast aluminum, and it's a rather weak post, even dropping one on the table can break crucial things. It sounds like you should be able to repair yours. Just make sure that it's a good bond and the float pin remains level.
