81 GS550 Gear Shifting Prob

Hi Im a proud new owner of a 81 GS550. This is my first bike. And I love it. lol. Ok here is my ?. While not moving I can't shift thru all the gears.. At first I could only get 1st, Neutral, 2nd. Then later that night I could only get 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th. Now I can only shift into 2nd and neutral. Is there something im doing wrong? The guy I bought it from said the engine was rebuilt 1000 miles ago, so I assumed the tranny works. My bike starts and runs really good but the tranny seems craped out. This is my first bike, and seeing how I haven't got my motorcycle license yet, I haven’t rode it. Is this just because im not moving? Or do I have tranny issues to work out? Thx -Arthur

I dont think anything is wrong, you have to be moving a little bit for the gears to properly mesh. dont mash on the shifter to hard if its not going into gear either, you might bend a shift fork.

It is because you aren't moving under power. the gearbox is constant mesh, so it needs to be rotating.
