    Can any one answer a wire harness Question

    A cutomer of mine has an 82 1100L that has a wiring problem dont know any more then that he just asked if I could find him a wiring harness so I posted in the parts wanted. the reply I go back was this can any one tell me if this would fit & how long it would take to remove it?

    "I have an 83 1100gl ... any idea how much work is involved in taking it off the bike? If you could give me an idea and then how much you would pay I'll let you know."

    Im kinda confused on the question, but ive taken a wiring harness off in about 5 minutes. Shouldnt take anyone more than 15 minutes I'd say.

      Not being totally familiar with that model, I have to ask a question in order to maybe answer yours:

      Was there an 1100L and an 1100GL available? If so, they might have different harnesses.

      Other than that, harnesses can change a bit from one year to the next, and I don't know what might have changed on the bike between those two years.

        I agree with Steve. Wiring harnesses can change from year to year, and model to model. You really need to do some research. Find a factory manual, or a Clymer's manual for each bike. Check for differences in the schematics.

        Removing and replacing the harness is fairly easy...on a stripped bike.

          Did the harness burn? Rewire the bad spots.
          1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
          1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

            Thanks Guy's I know it is confusing playing middle man & asking tech questions. I thought ther might be minor changes from year to year. Customer says before he got the bike it was droped / dumped several times somthing about thr po being home on leave dump it leave home again fix it dumpt it,

            But what I get out of his problem is very intermitent can go for a while then while riding total engine shutdown pop the cluch & it starts right back up but he is afraid of it happening in a turn or w/ his wife on back. my gues is a short in the wire some where but he claims a shop went threw it rode it for several miles & nothig happened.

            I keep telling him to post here to ask his own questions hopfully he will soon.

              Might want to check the valves,...remember when that was happening to me?

                Make sure there are no holes in the harness. If there are all the electrical smoke will dissipate. This link will help. Please understand it was written for British machines which, in the past, used a positive ground (earth).

                      This explains why the Lucas electrics on my '50s BSAs and Triumphs never worked properly. It's a shame I didn't realize that the smoke had leaked out and was in need of replacement.

                        Pop the clutch and it starts up again! Hmm maybe the problem is in the clutch switch.
