    Those darn Phillips head bolts...

Obviously, my project bike is getting torn down for the first time. I know this because every bolt has fused itself to the engine. The bike is a 77 GS750 & it doesn't look like anythings ever been off except the valve cover. I busted two bolts (1 exhaust & 1 cam bearing) removing the head & block, but their both off and neither look to be a problem.

I am scared to death of stripping out the heads, so what is the best way to go about getting these out.

Before I cuss out the neighborhood trying to remove all the phillips head botls from the engine covers, I thought I'd ask if there are any tricks to making this easier. I plan on replacing them with Allen bolts during the rebuild

Impact driver is a must. The cussing is required, too.

Manual states to use an impact driver.

Somewhere on here there was a link posted to polished stainless bolt kits with conventional heads to replace the philips ones. Why the hell they used those... who knows!

I learned a trick working on aircraft phillips screws that usually works better than an impact driver (Impact drivers dent panels).
Take a speedhandle or brace with the bit holder adapter, (larger is better so you can lean on the handle/knob on the end). Then while pushing against the screw, using the speedhandle, rotate the bit back and forth taking advantage of the slop in the tool. This allows the bit to reseat itself in the screw. Usually will pop loose a screw after only a few back and forth cycles.
Another thing that can help give the bit some bite in the screw is a dab of valve grinding compound.
            Good Luck! Steve

Buy a can of SeaFoam deep creep penetrant( Napa has it) (or you favorite), spray around your bolts and let set for awhile then begin your quest to remove the bolts with an impact driver using short quick shots with the hammer.
