Hmmm, maybe there is a difference between the 1978
and the 1978 GS 750. I have a 79GS750 and my book
gives a point gape range of 0.3-0.4mm or between
.012 and .016 inches. I take the middle road and try to
set the point gaps at .014

That's odd. Both numbers come directly from page 76 of the Suzuki shop manual for the '78 GS750. Now that you pointed it out, .35 mm converts to 0.0137795 inches. Looks like the shop manual has a mistake in the conversion.
Man, I hope there are no mistakes in the torque specs elsewhere in this book. I'd hate to have some critical bolt loosen up on me at an inopportune time.
Nice catch, Earl.

Site for General Specifications for GS750
I found a General Specfications chart fot the GS750 at this site, http://www.cadvision.com/smithb/whoswho/gs750spe.htm . It too has the points settings at .35mm or .018". You may want to check out the site for other specs if you're interested.

Re: points
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the stock points system.
Spend the money for an electronic system if you wish, but it is not
necessary. Its true that an electronic system once set is maintenance free. Points need periodic adjustment and replacement. However, if an electronic system quits working, youre going to be walking. If points quit, 9 times out of 10, you can get them working again well enough to get home. Thank you, I think I will stick with my points. :-)
