    Need stator..what is compatible?

    Yesterday I bought my first GS, it's an 81 GS650L. It needs a new stator and the previous owner had pulled out the old ones....I'm looking first at used ones, what other models might be compatible w/my bike?

    Should I just forget used and go new? Alternatives?

      The charging system is the weak link in the GS. IMHO Electrex from Electrosport is the best on the market if you are looking to buy new. I am real happy with mine. I did also buy their regulator but did not install it as I am using my super heavy duty, homebrew design with great success (I just wanted a working commercial reg for reference).
      Seems like the Electrex stator has a thicker winding which gives a lower open circuit output voltage at the coils (40V) but can deliver a few more amps which is a useful thing.

          I saw those Electrex ones for about $107...looks like a used stock one is going to be about $50...should I just step up to the new one? opinions?

            I have one off of my bike (550E)...nothing wrong with it...replaced it, and that wasnt the problem...
            I'll sell it to you, if it doesnt work, you can send it back and I'll give you your $$$ back.....

                  Stator Problem

                  This will sound dumb but what is the stator and what does it do?
                  Also where is it located because I might have the same problem on my GS 750EF. Can't get a spark, what do you think?

                    Stator is like an alternator in a car.
                    Under the case cover by your left foot.
                    Re-build your carbs. (Go to the main page, and you'll find out how to do it.Get O-rings from Robert Barr.)Then go through your entire electrical system, take apart all the connections, bolts, etc...and apply die-electric grease.
                    Start with THAT...first...TRUST ME...:-D

                      The stator is the coil winding assembly in your permanent magnet, 3 phase alternator. It generates AC electrical current which is changed to DC by your Rectifier and along with your Regulator recharges your battery and powers the machine. The stator and the permanent magnets which spin on the end of the crankshaft and are called the rotor, are located under the cover on the left side of the engine. This is the charging system of your bike.

                      No dumb questions, man. Although I sometimes give dumb answers. :shock: :-D

                        Start trouble shooting your bike with the battery. Make sure it's fully charged, then the fuses. What year is the EF? If your's is a points ignition system that's the next thing to check. Contact breaker gap. Spark plug gap. And, as speedzter, said all the wiring connections long the way.

                        Might be obvious about this time you're going to need a manual so latch on to one, you'll need it for the wiring diagram alone. Good luck. Welcome to the nuthouse. :-D

                          He doesn't have points but ditto on the rest. With a fully charged battery and bad stator it should start. I would trace the problem starting with the battery through the ignition system. Check spark plugs, plug wires and end caps on the plug wires. Then check signal generater under the round cover on the right side of the bike which leads to the igniter and then the coils.
