When was the last time you went through your carbs.Try changing plug wires with a good cylinder to see if it in fact your coil is bad.I lost a cylinder the last time i took my carbs off and there was a piece of gunk stuck on the pickup tube that goes into the float bowl.It may not be your coil.If you have a meter chekc the ohms coming out of it.

swap 2&3 plug wires. If 3 is intermittant now replace the plug caps, If 2 is still intermittant Clean the carbs. Otherwise if you are planning to have the bike for a LONG time Buy a set of Dyna 3 ohm coils, & Use an old 70's mopar dual balast resistor- (one side is 2 ohms) If you convert to Dyna ign ? just remove the balast

A problem with #2 is a classic textbook symptom of a problem with your petcock. I bet the plug is fouled.

#2 is where the vacuum line from the petcock plugs in. When the petcock goes bad after 20+ years, the thin vacuum diaphragm in the petcock develops very VERY small leaks that allow gasoline to drip into the vacuum line when under pressure and thence into the #2 cylinder, causing it to run rich and eventually foul.

Replace the petcock with an original Suzuki part (usually only $40 - $60) and ride happy for another 20+ years. Don't screw around with the shoddy rebuild kits out there.

Thats cylinder number 3 that has the vacuum petcock vent.

Dyna also do a 5 Ohm kit which I think can be used with the points type with no balast... check out z1 Enterprises. Jeff will likely know.

I just bought a set of coils $120. Leads $16 & plugs around 8 bucks.

Pretty easy to try swapping plugs & leads round first as suggested above.

Whoops, sorry. On the earlier carbs, it's #3, and the later CV carbs, it's at #2. Carry on...

i had a shop that specializes in old bikes go through the carbs last summer and it ran great until the last couple of weeks before I put it in storage. during the summer i put in a new R/R to fix some charging issues, but it was a good month later that i started to have trouble with #2. So, I'm thinking i'll start with the caps. . . how do I clean those things???8-[
i suppose new wires couldn't hurt either.

thanks in advance for the info.

What about your points and condensors? Mine 79 750 was running great than all of a sudden it acted like somebody pulled 2 plug wires off and it was the points.Check for spark there first. Its not likley it would be a cap if it was running good before. What is # 2 cylinder doing?is it cold or slow heating up.I had my 650 do this after changing the float seat o-rings and it turned out to be a peice of crud stuck on one of the float bowl pickup tubes.
