    starter motor brushes

hi everyone, this is my first post on this site so here goes. im busy restoring a gsx1100et and the brushes are worn out on the starter motor, this was easy for me to work out cos im an electrician, what i would like to know is, do you have to buy the whole plate assy including the springs etc, or can you just buy the brushes, the brush pig tails are spot welded to the plate assy which isnt a problem, on my parts cd it only lists the brushes, can any one help and also, where can i get them....cheers very lots

    howdy

how's life in N. Yorks? Spent a lot of time in Whitby thru my work, actually my wife is from Scarborough and a good friend by the name of Catchpole lives up in Redcar someplace....

Anyway, from my local Suzi dealer I can buy any of the combos you mentioned from just the brushes to the complete assembly. I don't recall the price off the top of my head. (Note I was asking him about parts for my 82 650 but presumably they have parts for others).

Others on the site have cleaned and/or replaced their brushes so they may know of other sources besides the dealer.

All I ever do when I need brushes, is get hold of a set that are slightly bigger than what I need at an auto parts place.

Then I file them down to size (nice soft graphite), and solder the copper 'pig tails' in. A drop of oil a short distance up the pig tail will make sure that solder doesn't run up the copper, so everything stays nice and flexible for the brushes to move inwards as they wear.

I have had good experience with them. I bought the plate, with brushes attached and ready for installation. Good prices and excellent service.
