Does this washer go here?
I pulled my clutch cover off and removed the bolts and springs to check out the clutch plates and then put it back together. After I put it together and added oil and started it up I noticed a washer below that I can't identify. It looks like it goes where I have it in the picture on the inside of the spindle that actuates the clutch. I have the washer held up by a screwdriver end. Can anyone tell me if the washer is supposed to go here. Thanks. Its a GS1100GLTags: None

It's a 1982. Item #23 is the spindle and #24 & 25 are on it. this washers ID is smaller then item #24 & 25 but does fit on the opposite side. In the picture you can't see the other side of #23 which is where I'm wondering if it goes. It doesn't look like it on the Schematic.

I have a 1983 GS1100GLD and just had the clutch plates off a couple days ago. I did not have any washer in the location you show in the photo. Mine was just like the diagram in the link from tkent02. I will likely have mine off tomorrow again, so I can look to see if there was a washer like that somewhere. I will post again if I find it.

Thanks Ifly85,
The schematic doesn't show the back of the spindle and I had the clutch cover off with the clutch plates right before I noticed the washer on the floor. I just wanted to make sure I didn't leave something out. Let me know what you find out. Thanks.

Alright, I verified on my bike that there are only the two washers(actually the washer and the roller bearing) between the spindle and the cover. There is no washer on the other side of the spindle. I guess that the washer you found was from something else other than the clutch.
Now, I can't get my spinle to mesh in correctly when installing the cover. I got it once, so I can do it again!
Good Luck.

I have no experience on this one, but I'm good at puzzles:-D . I'm guessing it's a number 29 from the diagram. It's just a guess, but your description leads me that direction.
Good Luck!

Thanks Ifly for checking. I currently have the washer installed and couldn't tell a difference. I'll have to pull it off. As far as getting the spindle to mesh, I made sure my clutch spindle that has the notches on one side faced the vertical shaft in the cover. When I pushed the cover on I wiggled and rotated the vertical shaft slightly and it slipped right on then.
GS850_Coug, The washer actually looks like item 25 on the schematic but has a smaller I.D. The reason I was asking is because it looks like it has similair machine markings from where the spindle fits into the hole in the nut (item 10). Thats what had me fooled.

Question: Did you also have the left side engine case off? The case covering the stator and starter clutch gears? If you did it's easy to lose this washer: (#3) Sometimes it sticks to the case bush and you don't even notice it.

Yes, I did have the left side stator cover off and the cover. I can't seem to picture where washer #3 is located. It looks like the right size though.

It goes on the shaft between the bushing that's in your engine sidecase and the starter gears labeled #1. Oil stiction will cause the washer to adhere to the case bushing and as it's a thin washer and if you don't know it's supposed to be there it's easy to miss it and easier to lose it when moving things around. Ahhh, ask me how I know...

Thanks Jimcor, I bet your right. I feel kind of dumb now sticking it in the clutch. Now I have to pull the clutch cover off for the third time. I'll swap it out as soon as I get off of work. I'll let you know tonight. Thanks again.
