    Wierd bogging at 3500 - 4500 RPM

    OK, so, as the title states, I have a wierd bogging problem at 3500 - 4500 rpms.

    Choke on, it goes away, no problems whatsoever.

    Cover Half of the small oval shaped air intake under the seat, and it is significantly decreesed.

    Caps are still on the air mixture screws.

    intake boots (between carbs and airbox) prolly should be replaced, but they are on (just don't seem to fit well)

    Boots from the carbs to the engine are fine. (checked for leaks)

    reg/rec is giving me some problems, have a replacement comeing in the mail (only getting 13.25 volts out of the charging system)

    Had the bike on a charger (2 amp) while running, still boggs

    Anything else I should check, I know I should replace the air filter, but it's all in tact excpt the foam around the back, could this be causing the problems???

    I know I need a new air filter, but I want the bike running well, come temps over 30.

    How old is the filter element? Could be you're just in need of a replacement.

      You are running lean (runs good on choke) so I vote for an intake or airbox leak of some kind. A bad filter (clogged) would make you run rich. I'm not sure what you mean by the foam missing. On the filter itself? If you are missing part of the filter portion on your filter and it started running lean I would say the filter is the culprit.

      It sounds like your stator is bad and not your R/R. Won't a bad R/R spike your voltage? A bad stator won't supply enough juice?

        The R/R is not your bog problem. The bike can run for hours on a fully charged battery even without the charging system attached.
        An incomplete/rotted filter will cause a bogging problem if there's enough of the foam missing.
        By the way, I've seen R/R that lets too much voltage through AND I've also seen R/R that lets too little through - It can go either way.

          Electrowhatever is sending me a new R/R. That's not the problem.

          The Filter LOOKS in good shape, but it is an ovel, one side is solid metal, the other has a hole in it, air flows though the filter the the hole. Where the metal with the hole in it meets the plastic of the airbox, there was a small foam ring. The ring was damaged when I was looking at it, so I took it off so it wouldn't get sucked into the carbs.

          Could that bee the problem, too much air from the airbox???

          Hmmmm, If that is it, then the boot not fitting completely from the carb to the airbox might be culprite too. They NEARLY fit, Black carbs can just see a little bit of silver near the boot, old oval shaped rubber, bendy in the middle...

            You should be able to replace the foam you took out with weatherstripping from a home improvement store. That is probably the main culprit. I would also replace the boots since they are apparently worn and starting to leak. Replacing them now will help to isolate the problem if they are not already contributing to the problem. If after fixing those the problem remains, I would look at plugged up fuel circuitry in the carb.

              Also...spray some WD-40 around each boot (at the head) and check for a change in RPM's. It could be the O-rings (if equipped) or the intake boots themselves or both. I had the same issue and for sure, it's a lean burn condition. Start at the air box and work your way forward to the head. Check all the connections with a shot of WD-40 (STARTING FLUID) 8-[ and listen for an RPM change. WD-40 will make the RPM's drop...other fluids will give you an increase.
