as per other thread found in search

GS550L (77-79) the specs are for the VM's

    idle r/min 1100-1200
    carb mik vm22ss
    id no 47110
    bore size 22 (0.87)
    float height 24.+/-1.0 (0.95 +/-0.04)
    fuel level 4.0+/-1.0 (0.16 +/-0.04)
    air screw 2.0 turns back
    cut away 1.5
    jet needle 5dl35-3 (the -3 3rd notch??)
    pilot screw 1.0
    pilot jet #15
    pilot outlet 0.6
    needle jet 0-6
    by pass 1.0
    main jet #80

GS550 (80-82) the specs are for the CV's

    idle r/min 1100-+/-100r/min
carb mik bs32ss (4 seprate carbs)
id no 47160 (us) 47170 (can)
    bore size 32 (1.26)
    float height 22.4.+/-1.0 (0.88 +/-0.04)
    fuel level 5.0+/-0.5 (0.20 +/-0.04)
    main jet #92.5
    main air jet 1.6
jet needle (4bel2 us model) (5f42-3rd notch canadian adjusable needle)
    needle jet x-6
    pilot jet #40
    throttle valve #135
    by pass (0.9, 0.7, 0.7 us model) (1.0,0.8,0.8 canadian)
    pilot outlet 0.7
    valve seat 2.0
    starter jet #35
pilot screw 3.5 turns back (mixture screw)
pilot air jet (us model #150) (#120 canadian)

these setting apply to all 550 models with the CV style carbs,
Me personaly would try to get the carbs as close to the the canadian specs as possable the US models were lean out so much to meet emissions. the candian specs give the bike a hardier fuel supply.

Don't know about those carbs, sound like trouble to me.
Since you specifically ask about the mixture screws....set them initially to 1 1/2 turns out. On the CV's, that will be close to factory and any serious problems (wont go over 40) will not be the fault of incorrect mixture screw adjustments.
On a correctly running bike, you would then fine tune the mixture screws using the highest rpm method.
I think you have other issues, but go ahead and try the screw adjustments and see if it improves.
And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

Another thing that will cause your slow pick-up and limited speed...

Do you have air filters installed?

CV carbs are very sensitive about having a bit of restriction on the intake side. If you don't have the stock airbox, you need to have individual pods installed. I know that installing the stock box is a pain, as I recently worked on a friend's '79 550. What I have found that works FOR TEMPORARY USE is to double over a shop rag, place it over the carb intakes, then tie-wrap it to the throats of #1 and #4 to hold it in place. This provides just enough restriction to to a road test, but I don't feel it is accurate enough to do jetting tests or spark plug reads.
